Become a force for change. Join NUHW’s Organizer-in-Training Program and get the skills you need to become a powerful organizer, an effective leader, and a catalyst for systemic change.
At NUHW, we believe that workers hold the power in their relationships with the boss. Our three-day program will teach you how to empower workers with the tools and strategies needed to effectively level the playing field. In our Organizer-In-Training Program you’ll learn to:
Learn how to have persuasive one-on-one organizing conversations.
Understand what motivates workers and how to identify workplace leaders and issues.
Empower workers with a plan to win and move them to take action.
NUHW’s three-day organizing intensive is for people interested in getting trained by experienced union organizers in the tactics and strategies of the labor movement. Participants will learn how to have persuasive one-on-one organizing conversations, identify workplace leaders, and understand the fundamentals of labor campaigns.
Participants who excel at the three-day intensive will then be invited to join a paid three-month apprenticeship* program at NUHW, and will be paired with lead organizers and researchers who will provide quality mentorship and one-on-one training.
NUHW member leaders and people new to the labor movement who are passionate about workers rights and social justice are encouraged to apply. Previous experience in activism, advocacy, or community organizing is a plus, but not required.
Passionate about healthcare? Curious about workers’ rights? Ready to be a catalyst for change? Be part of the movement that’s making a difference in workplaces across the country as union favorability continues to grow. Register now >>
The three-day training intensive is not paid. However, reimbursement is available for travel and accommodation expenses incurred to attend the training (January 24-26). Those invited to complete the three-month apprenticeship will be compensated.
In the three day training, you’ll learn the essential tactics to help workers organize and advocate for their rights effectively. In this training, participants will have the opportunity to network with experienced organizers and like-minded individuals dedicated to creating positive change. Following the training day, join us for dinner and discussion to hear from a panel of staff and member leaders involved in active campaigns building political, social, and worker power.
The three-day training will take place at NUHW’s Southern California headquarters in Glendale (225 W. Broadway, 4th floor) from Friday January 24 through Sunday, January 26.
Experiential Learning: The apprenticeship will build on the coursework from the three-day intensive by providing participants with hands-on experience working on active campaigns. They will be required to do the work of identifying and recruiting workplace leaders, setting up and conducting worksite visits, developing a turnout plan and executing other OIT skills in real time.
Participants will benefit from the guidance and mentorship of dynamic, experienced labor leaders, while applying the fundamentals of organizing to improve workplace standards and address wage disparities. NUHW apprentices will engage in a variety of activities, including:
OIT apprentices may be required to travel to different cities, workplaces, or regions depending on operational needs. For NUHW members, apprenticeships may take place at their own worksite.
We are always looking for talented rank-and-file leaders and organizers to join our paid staff. Those who are successful in the apprenticeship will be considered for full-time employment based on operational needs following completion of the program.
