Frank Kamaney

Frank Kameny was gay activist and one of the most significant figures in the movement. A veteran of World War II and a graduate of Harvard University, he was dismissed from his position as astronomer with the U.S. Army Map Service in 1957 and barred from future federal employment over allegations that he was gay. He became the first known gay person to file a gay-related case before the Supreme Court, but his petition was denied. That motivated Kameny to spend the rest of his life fighting for gay rights. His struggle inspired a miltant new era of gay rights movement of the 1960s and remained active until his death in 2011.
