Sanctuary for All Update: February-March 2025

NUHW is working in close collaboration with community and elected allies to protect our communities against the Trump Administration’s political and legislative attacks on health care.

Here are some recent actions our union has taken:

In February, NUHW joined with UAW members in sending a letter to our senators urging them to filibuster and vote NO on a bill that could remove workplace protections for trans workers and harm the safety of women and girls more broadly. The discriminatory bill died in the Senate after failing to secure the 60 votes needed to overcome the filibuster.

NUHW also signed on to the second Fight for Our Health letter to Congress which continues our work of defending Medicaid (Medi-Cal in California). This letter is directed to the House and Senate committees that have jurisdiction to determine the fate of this program. Additionally, it states opposition to specific policy proposals that continue to be advocated by Republican members of Congress.

We also joined with key California Congressional members and community leaders to try to stop attacks on children’s mental health care cuts to Children’s Medi-Cal by signing several coalition letters to Congressman Calvert, Congressman Valadao and Congresswoman Kim.

In early March, NUHW stood in solidarity with Assemblymember Pilar Shiavo, the Fight for Our Health coalition, and Dr. Jasmeet Bains to announce Assembly Joint Resolution 3 at a press conference on the capital steps. This resolution calls on state leaders to demand Congress stop proposed Medicaid cuts.

You can read the resolution here: Bill Text – AJR-3 Public social services: Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid.

As part of the California Coalition of Behavioral Health, we are also supporting the education and awareness campaign aimed at fighting cuts to Medicaid. Please see the fact sheet here.

Stay tuned for more monthly updates as we continue to work in coalition to ensure our communities continue to have safe, equitable access to healthcare.
