We had a successful action in Bakersfield on Thursday with more than 30 strikers participating, including folks from the Inland Empire, Orange County and Los Angeles. The protest began outside Kaiser’s medical offices, where the building manager called police. After a peaceful “die-in” demonstration and a rally outside the building, protesters then marched about a half mile to Kaiser’s local administrative offices and picketed outside that building as well.
The action was covered by the NBC and ABC affiliates in Bakersfield, as well as several YouTubers.
5-day Hunger Strike to Start April 7
Nearly a dozen strikers have decided to hold a 5-day hunger strike outside the Kaiser Los Angeles Medical Center starting Monday, April 7. The details are still being worked out. This is a decision made by workers who want to demonstrate our collective commitment to making Kaiser stop treating behavioral health care as a second class service.
All participants are being asked to get physical assessments, including bloodwork before starting the five-day hunger strike. We are also making arrangements for medical supervision. We already have NUHW and UNAC-represented RNs ready to support the action. We’ll have more details about the hunger strike next week.
