Kaiser Mental Health Care Strike: April 8, 2025

Our hunger strikers are doing well after an exciting second day of their five-day action. The biggest highlight was a visit from Tom Morello, who was the guitarist for Rage Against the Machine.

He played four songs including the original version of “This Land is My Land,” and told everyone that if Pete Seeger were alive today, he’d be with them on the picket line, too.

More media outlets covered the hunger strike, including NPR and KTLA. Two Kaiser management officials, including the same person who months ago stopped the food deliveries outside LAMC, tried to intimidate workers by standing close to them as they talked to the reporter, but the workers didn’t flinch.

You can RSVP here to visit hunger strikers outside LAMC, 4867 Sunset Boulevard. They will maintain a public presence outside the hospital from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday and from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday.

Action in Orange County Wednesday
We’re picketing the Health Evolution Summit in Orange County, where Kaiser CEO Greg Adams is scheduled to give an address. The protest will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday. RSVP here. After the picket line, we’ll leaflet Greg Adams neighborhood in nearby Laguna Hills.

On-stage invite to Bernie Sanders/Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez rally
Sen. Bernie Sanders and Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez are bringing their “Fighting Oligarchy” tour to Los Angeles this Saturday, and Kaiser strikers will be invited on stage, while California Labor Federation President Lorena Gonzalez speaks about the strike. RSVP here to attend. Doors open at 9 a.m., and the speaking portion begins at 1 p.m. at Gloria Molina Grand Park, 137 N. Broadway in Los Angeles.

Watch the National Association of Social Workers Strike Town Hall
The National Association of Social Workers is holding an online Town Hall in support of our strike. Several strikers will participate, shedding light on the unique challenges faced by social workers in the Kaiser system and sharing their experience of being on strike. The Town Hall is scheduled for this Thursday from noon to 1:30 p.m. Register here.

New complaint generates press coverage
Courthouse News wrote a story today about a complaint we just filed with the California Department of Managed Health Care about Kaiser using unlicensed staff and algorithms to triage mental health patients.
