Ellen Ochoa is an American engineer, former astronaut, and the first Hispanic woman to go to space. In 1993, she flew on the Space Shuttle Discovery as a mission specialist, marking her historic achievement. Ochoa went on to complete four space missions, logging nearly 1,000 hours in orbit. An accomplished engineer and researcher, she holds several patents for optical systems and has made significant contributions to the field of space exploration. Ochoa also served as the director of NASA’s Johnson Space Center from 2013 to 2018, becoming the first Hispanic and second female director in its history. She is celebrated for her contributions as well and her work as a mentor and advocate for women and minorities in STEM fields.
