Prop 50: Stop Election Rigging — Vote YES on November 4

What is California’s Election Rigging Response Act?

Prop. 50 is constitutional, and it has been endorsed by NUHW’s Executive Board.

The Election Rigging Response Act is a proposal for California to undertake mid-decade redistricting that would create five new liberal-leaning seats in the U.S. Congress. The measure will appear on the November 2025 ballot as Proposition 50.

Why is this happening?

In July 2025, President Trump demanded that Texas undertake immediate redistricting to create five additional Republican House seats. Texas subsequently began an aggressive gerrymandering plan, targeting Houston and Dallas-Fort Worth to increase Republican control despite diverse electorates in those cities.

When this happened, California had to respond. Without action, anti-union extremists could control Congress through 2030. Prop 50 puts the power in the hands of the People of California to approve emergency congressional district maps.

What are the possible long-term consequences if Texas enacts gerrymandered redistricting and California does nothing?

  • Consequences for the labor movement: Control of the House by Trump-aligned Congressmembers would enable passage of national right-to-work legislation, federal preemption of state labor protections, and gutting of the National Labor Relations Board. Texas gains without a response could cement anti-union control through 2030.
  • Consequences for healthcare: Sustained conservative majorities would enable systematic dismantling of Affordable Care Act protections and elimination of pre-existing condition protections that benefit union health plans. It would also likely result in cuts to CDC funding, elimination of pandemic preparedness programs, and rollback of workplace safety regulations.
  • Consequences for democracy: Redistricting could create permanent minority rule, and far-right House majorities could block voting rights legislation, enable partisan voter purges, and support state restrictions that harm working-class voters.
