Kaiser Mental Health Care Strike: Day 93

We began the 4th month of our strike in fine form today. ABC7 came out early to the Woodland Hills picket to interview people on the picket line. In Downey, a local store owner brought enough wings and garlic noodles for all 70 people on the line to eat. We also had great energy in San Diego and Riverside.

Yesterday, about 120 people gathered outside LAMC for an MLK Day rally. We began work on a commemorative quilt, with people writing in fabric markers why they’re striking and what equity means to them. Everyone on the picket lines will also have a chance to add their panels as the quilt takes shape.

Several bargaining team members spoke at the rally, including William Johnson, who provided an off-the-cuff commentary on Kaiser’s bargaining update.

Kudos to our committee last week for pressuring Kaiser to finally do a full accounting of its very fuzzy math to support its very erroneous claim that we’re somehow seeking 19 hours per day not to be with patients.

Town Hall
On Sunday, we had more than 400 people in our Zoom Town Hall. There were a lot of good questions and everyone who spoke expressed resolve for continuing to strike until we win a fair contract.

One participant asked why we made movement on Thursday when Kaiser didn’t. One of our bargaining team members replied that we expected that Kaiser would try to demoralize us by coming to the table with nothing and then agreeing to only one session per week — but we still need to focus on doing the work to push us towards a fair agreement.

That includes staying strong on the picket lines, continuing to confront Kaiser at the bargaining table while being open to compromise, and showing our strength inside Kaiser facilities by engaging non-NUHW coworkers and passing out leaflets and support stickers. UNAC-represented workers wore their stickers on Thursday and posted on social media:
