NUHW continues its commitment to Sanctuary for All

NUHW is continuing to be active in the movement to protect the rights of immigrant workers and all communities whose rights are under threat from federal authorities.

Over the past month, NUHW has:

  • Signed the “We Stand with L.A.” Letter, along with San Francisco elected officials, labor, and community groups. A similar letter is being developed for Alameda County as well.

  • Participated in “We Are California: Hands Off L.A.” virtual teach-in to better understand the Trump Administration’s actions in Los Angeles, and how we can organize in solidarity with the local community.

  • Endorsed SB 627, the “No Secret Police Act,” which was authored by Senators Scott Wiener and Jesse Arreguín. In recent months, federal law enforcement officials have conducted raids — in California and across the country — while covering their faces, and sometimes badges, names, and other identifying information. In several operations, masked federal law enforcement officers have grabbed residents off the street and whisked them away to detention centers across state lines without contacting their families or loved ones.

This bill prohibits law enforcement at all levels operating in California from covering their faces while conducting operations, with limited exemptions for masks for fire-related or medical reasons. The bill would also ensure that SWAT officers can protect their faces as necessary on duty and require that officers have their names or other identifying information on their uniforms.Endorsed SB 81, authored by State Senator Jesse Arreguín.This bill would extend protections against immigration enforcement to all California hospitals and healthcare facilities, prohibiting staff from sharing immigration-related information or granting access to nonpublic areas without a judicial warrant. The bill also requires facilities to adopt clear protocols for responding to enforcement requests, ensuring that all Californians can safely seek medical care regardless of immigration status.

NUHW is also working with local organizations to protect the rights of everyone in our country. Below is a list of organizations whose efforts we are currently supporting:

  • Coalition of Humane Immigrant Rights, Los Angeles (CHIRLA): A leading immigrant rights and advocacy organization that is organizing to achieve a just society, fully inclusive of immigrants.

  • Bay Resistance: Working to advance racial, economic, climate, and gender justice by activating individuals and families to build a just world.

  • Summer of Resistance Coalition: Led by Los Angeles labor unions, the coalition aims to lead a month-long rapid response effort and movement for peaceful protest in answer to the Trump regime’s ICE raids throughout Southern California.

  • California Federation of Labor Unions: Working to defend the interests of working people and their families for the betterment of California’s communities. From legislative campaigns to grassroots organizing, our affiliates are actively engaged in every aspect of California’s economy and government.

  • CLUE Justice: Bringing together clergy and lay leaders of all faiths with the marginalized, the unheard, and the least protected — low-wage workers and immigrants — in the cause of a just economy that works for everyone, not just those at the top.

  • Stop Essayli: A statewide movement to stop interim U.S. Attorney Bill Essayli from further endangering LGBTQ+ youth, immigrant communities, our environment, labor leaders, and compromising the impartial administration of justice.
