Phil Ting is a member of the California State Assembly and chair of the Assembly Budget Committee. Born in Portland, Oregon, Ting earned an undergraduate degree in political science from UC Berkeley, and an MBA from Harvard Business School before getting into politics.
Ting began his political career in 2005, when he was appointed to the San Francisco Assessment Appeals Board by then-Mayor Gavin Newsom. He later served as president of the board before running for office himself. In 2012, Ting was elected to the California State Assembly, representing the 19th Assembly District, which includes parts of San Francisco and Daly City.
As a member of the State Assembly, Ting has focused on issues such as education, affordable housing, and environmental protection. He has authored several pieces of legislation aimed at reducing greenhouse gas emissions, increasing access to affordable housing, and expanding access to education. He has also been an advocate for stronger consumer protection laws and has worked to increase transparency and accountability in government.
